Add Linux (File & Folder Backup)

Estimated reading: 8 minutes 0 views

Linux servers can be backed up at files and folders level using the BDRSuite Backup Server. You can simply add the source to the BDRSuite Backup Server and configure backups. Navigate to Data Sources tab and choose Add Linux.

When a Linux machine is added to the BDRSuite Backup server, a BDRSuite Backup Agent (BBA) is automatically or manually  installed in the target machine. In order for the agent to be installed, certain prerequisites are to be met by the Linux target machine. Check for the Prerequisite (Link given above), if already done then you can follow the below steps to add the Linux machines.

Procedure to add Linux Machine

Linux machine has to be added before you begin configuring the backup schedule. In the Data Sources tab choose ‘ Add Linux (File & Folder Backup). You will be taken to a page where you will see a message stating ‘No host added’ if you adding host for the first time.

Click on ‘ Add Linux Machine ‘ and there are three distinct methods provided on the opening page for adding  which are as follows;

  • Add Host & Install Agent Manually
  • Add Host & Install Agent Automatically
  • Import Host from CSV  file (Bulk Installation)
  • Import Host from AD/LDAP Server (Bulk Installation)

1. Add Host & Install Agent Automatically

  • Enter the target Linux Host details and save to the BDRSuite Backup Server/Client.

  • Download and install BDRSuite Backup Agent (BBA) on the target host, which runs as a Service with the name BDRSuite Delegation Service.
  • Click the ‘Register BBA’ button alongside the added host under the ‘Data Sources’ menu. This will establish connection between the target host and the BDRSuite Backup Server/Client.
  • You can configure backups for Linux Hosts that have successfully connected and registered with the BDRSuite Backup Server/Client.

2. Add Host & Install Agent Automatically

This option allows you to add each host by entering their IP address and credentials.  This will automatically install BBA on the target host

Add Linux machine by providing ‘Hostname/IP Address and its login credentials.

Note: You can add as many Linux machines into the BDRSuite Backup Server whenever required

IP Address/DNS Name

Enter the hostname or IP address of the hostname for which you have to proceed with the backup

The Hostname can be added using FQDN(Fully qualified domain name) ie., machine_name.domain_name. You can connect your host with BDRSuite Backup Server through the following combinations in the Hostname/IP Address section:

  • Hostname – Enter the Hostname alone
  • Hostname@Domain name – Enter the hostname followed by @ and domain name
  • Domain name/Hostname – Enter the domain name followed backslash (/) and the hostname
  • 192.xxx.xxx.xxx – Enter the IP address

Note: If you have provided an invalid Hostname/IP address, the following alert message will be displayed “Unable to connect the Linux Machine. Please check network connection settings”

Credentials

  • You can add new credentials or select existing credentials. Click here to read more.
  • User Name: Enter the username of the specific host
  • Password: The password of the host or IP Address

Port Number

  • 42005: Port used for communication between BDRSuite Integration Service and BDRSuite Backup Server
  • BDRSuite Backup Server communicates with the Linux machines using the port that is set to 42005 as default. You can modify this port number as per your port number availability.

Save the host after adding all the details.

The Linux machine will be added to the BDRSuite Backup Server if you had chosen automatic installation of BBA.

Edit

You can select a different credential or add a new credential.

Delete

If you want to remove a particular Linux Server, click the Delete option. A pop-up window with the message “Are you sure, you want to delete the selected server or host?” will appear. Click Yes, Delete.

Rescan/Register BBA

The Rescan option installs the BDRSuite Integration Service agent automatically in the Linux  machine, which is mandatory to proceed with the backup. In the status column, you can view the current progress while you rescan. If you had chosen the manual BBA installation option then the Register button will be given in the place of rescan.

Report

The Agent information report gives you the stage-wise report of the agent installation, click the Reports icon to view the Machine Name, Version, Installed Time, Status, Remarks. Further, expand it to view the installation start and end time.

BDRSuite Backup Server pushes VIS – BDRSuite Integration Service onto the added target machine. BDRSuite Integration Services: VIS acts as an agent in the target machine in which the data present in the machine has to be backed up. BDRSuite Integration Service reads the data from the added machine and lists the files & folders in the BDRSuite Backup Server for backup.

3.  Import Host from CSV  file

You can choose this option to add multiple Linux machines through CSV file import.

Note: If you are using this option then the BBA (BDRSuite Backup Agent) has to be installed manually in to the target host. Automatic BBA installation is not supported for CSV file import method.

Step 1: Create a .csv file containing Host’s Name/ IP Address (that you wish to backup) as comma-separated values.

Note: IP Address can be used only if the host have static IP addresses.

Eg1: name1, name2, name3, name4,..

Eg2: 192.168.100.101, 192.168.100.102, 192.168.100.103,…

Eg3: 192.168.100.101, name1, 192.168.100.103,…

Step 2: In the BDRSuite Backup Server console, enter or browse the CSV file location and click ‘ Save’.

All the hosts provided in the file will be listed in the “ Data Sources ” menu. You will be able to configure backups for hosts only after the BDRSuite Backup Agent (BBA) is installed in the hosts.

Step 3 : Install BDRSuite Backup Agent (BBA) for Files & Folders Backup on each of the target hosts. BBA uses port 42005 to communicate with the BDRSuite Backup Server.

To install BBA in the Linux host use the command below ;

Debian Linux:

bash BDRSuite_Delegation_Service_5_6_0_0_DBN.bin yes admin “/home/vembuintegrationservice”

Red Hat Linux:

bash BDRSuite_Delegation_Service_5_6_0_0_RH.bin yes admin “/home/vembuintegrationservice”

Step 4: Click the ‘ Register BBA ‘ button alongside the added host under the ‘ Data Sources ‘ menu. This will establish connection between the target host and the BDRSuite server. You can configure backups only for hosts that have successfully connected and registered with the backup server.

  • AD/LDAP Server

If the AD/LDAP Server is already added then choose it from the drop down menu .

  • Filter Criteria

You can use the filter option to display only the hosts based on filter criteria such as All Organizational units or Domain Controllers (Criteria). The hosts can be filtered by the following options;

  1. Selecting a criteria.
  2. Selecting a criteria and entering a distinguished name.
  3. Entering a distinguished name without selecting a criteria.
  • Enter the distinguish Name

Enter the distinguished name of the host to be added as a data source.

Once after entering all the details click on Next: Host Selection.

Select the entire host or just the machines that are listed based on the applied filter and click on Add .

This will take you to the page where you need to add/select the credentials and also choose how you want to install the BBA. Check for BBA prerequisites here.

After selecting the hosts, they will appear on the page along with the option to search for hosts by name. Information such as the credential name, BBA installation type, and the option to edit credentials or installation types as needed are also available.

In case you want to remove the added hosts you can do the same by selecting the respective host’s checkbox and click on the remove button.

Now, you can click on Save and Ok, Proceed.

The Windows host will be added to the BDRSuite Backup Server if you had chosen automatic installation of BBA. If you choose to manually download and install the BBA then you need to click on the Register BBA button to establish a connection between the added host and the BDRSuite Backup Server. The following options will be available after adding the Linux machine;

Edit

You can select a different credential or add a new credential.

Delete

If you want to remove a particular Windows Server, click the Delete option. A pop-up window with the message “Are you sure, you want to delete the selected server or host?” will appear. Click Yes, Delete.

Rescan/Register BBA
