Data Compression

Data compression is used while backing up data using the BDRSuite Backup Server to save storage space and reduce the amount of time required to transfer the data.

BDRSuite Backup Server uses compression algorithms to compress the data before saving it to the backup medium, i.e. repositories such as a hard drive, NAS, SAN, DAS etc. The compression ratio depends on the type of data being backed up, with some data types being more compressible than others.

Setting the compression level to ‘Low’ will result in roughly a 50% reduction in storage, while ‘Optimal’ will give you an additional 5% reduction, and ‘High’ will provide a 10% reduction. These estimates are based on our testing, but actual compression ratios may vary for each customer depending on the data type. We advise using the ‘Optimal’ level for the best balance of compression efficiency and backup speed.

In the BDRSuite Backup Server, navigate to Backup -> Configure Backup Settings -> Data Compression Level.

The user will be given the option to choose from High, Optimal and Low compression rate. Once selected, click on save and all the data the users backup will be compressed accordingly.

Deduplication/Data Reduction

Data reduction is the process of abstracting large amounts of data into a more compact and manageable form to store in a repository. The goal of data reduction is to minimize data volume while preserving the characteristics of the original data. BDRSuite Backup Server encrypts and compresses the backup data before writing it to the repository to achieve the same.
