VMware Quiescing

VMWare Quiescing is a process used to ensure that all data that is stored within a virtual machine is in a consistent state when a backup of the VM is taken. It does this by using a pre-backup snapshot of the virtual machine, freezing the I/O operations, flushing the file system buffers, and writing all unsaved data to the virtual machine’s disk. The process of quiescing a virtual machine can take a few seconds, depending on the amount of data that needs to be quiesced.

This process allows BDRSuite to reliably capture the state of a virtual machine so that the data can be seamlessly restored in the event of a system failure.

Benefits

VMware quiescing ensures that all data written to disk is consistent and up-to-date. This ensures that the data is in a known state, which is especially important for applications like databases. Quiescing also prevents data corruption by ensuring that all data is written to disk before the system is powered off or restarted.

Quiescing ensures that applications are available to users more quickly since they are not affected by the data flux during a backup.

Quiescing also helps to reduce the risk of data loss caused by applications that are actively writing to disk while the backup is taking place. By pausing the applications and flushing any data that is in memory to disk, the risk of data loss is significantly reduced.

You can realize all the above benefits in BDRSuite just by using a simple toggle button to enable VMware Quiescing.
