Application-aware VM Replication

BDRSuite allows for application aware backups, replication and restoration of application/transactional resources such as Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, etc. This is a key feature of modern backup solutions as transactional aware backups are critical in today’s data/application rich environments.

Application aware backups allow for application data living in memory as well as pending I/O operations to be backed up correctly along with files on disk which is critical for transactional consistency.

Example

In the case of Microsoft SQL Server, application aware settings are critical for ensuring consistent transactional data. This ensures that all data in memory and pending I/O is flushed successfully and included in the backup/replication data. Failure to use application aware settings with Microsoft SQL Server and other products such as Microsoft Exchange can result in inconsistent and potentially corrupted backups/replications.

Working

BDRSuite does not process application logs by default and creates a crash-consistent backup of VMs that use transaction logs for operations. You must enable application-aware processing in job settings to create transactionally consistent backups or replication of VMs running Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange, or Oracle.

When BDRSuite triggers the VM snapshot and begins copying VM data to the target, Microsoft VSS ensures that there are no unfinished database transactions or incomplete application files.

Guest Operating System Support

  • Application-aware processing is possible for Windows VMs running Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange
  • Application-aware processing is also possible for Windows/Linux VMs running Oracle
