Agentless VM Backup

Agentless backups rely on an external system to manage and execute backups for each source system. In theory, the host or the central backup server handles all processing, storage, replication, and other functions.

Hyper-V has a hypervisor host that houses many different VMs. The term “agentless” refers to the fact that users can manage all of those VMs from a single agent installation on the hypervisor. This eliminates the need for an agent to be installed on each and every VM instance on that host (1 versus n installs). The host agent can protect one VM or the entire host from a single installation.

Working

By inserting an agent into the hypervisor host, BDRSuite integrates with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to create fast, high-performance snapshots of virtual discs attached to VMs. The backup software communicates with VSS and instructs it on what to backup. VSS performs a series of steps that prepare the data for backup. The VSS provider takes a snapshot of the volume and gives the backup solution access to it by sending the file to the backup server. The snapshot is then backed up by the backup server.

When it comes to backup efficiency and copying only unique data blocks between full backups (creating incremental backups), change tracking technology is critical. For incremental VM backup, Resilient Change Tracking (RCT) is a useful Hyper-V feature. This feature is available in Hyper-V 2016, 2019, and later versions. At the hypervisor level, changed blocks are now effectively tracked. Rather than writing its own change tracking filters, BDRSuite for Hyper-V uses RCT via special APIs for more efficient backup and replication.

Key benefits

Agentless backup is more convenient to implement because you don’t have to reboot your system when performing your backup. There is no such thing as downtime.

Agentless backup software has little impact on server performance as it eliminates the CPU resource drain that agent-based software causes.

Agentless backup is designed from the ground up for virtual environments such as VMware and Hyper-V.

Since everything is in one place, managing agentless backup is much easier. Having your backup solution centrally simplifies management.
