Microsoft Exchange Server Recovery

Due to the importance and criticality of email service, a regular Microsoft Exchange backup should be performed to ensure that all mail items can be recovered in the event of a disaster or server crash. Since Microsoft Exchange runs multiple processes at the same time, its backup operations are more complex than simple copies of files that are not in use at the time. That means Microsoft Exchange backup software must be advanced enough to ensure data consistency.

BDRSuite makes use of the Windows VSS tool. This tool allows for highly effective incremental Exchange backup and quick, simple single mailbox recovery at the mailbox level. This saves storage space and makes Exchange server backups more efficient. You can also meet lower recovery time objectives (RTOs) by eliminating the need for full restores.

How to Restore Exchange Server with BDRSuite

BDRSuite supports recovering your Exchange Server backup data either as a complete image-level backup (or) allows you to perform a granular level restore of individual items.

BDRSuite offers agentless image-level backup for Microsoft Exchange servers deployed in virtual environments like VMware or Hyper-V and in physical environments – Windows. BDRSuite backs up the entire VM or physical machine including OS, applications and other files.

So, if source Exchange server is unreachable due to system crash or major disaster, you can recover the entire VM or physical machine instantly using Instant Boot VM (or) Full VM Recovery feature.

IT admins might run into a situation, where any individual mailbox or email might get corrupted. In this scenario, recovering entire VM or physical machine takes more time and resources. Also, this is not an ideal recovery option. Exchange Server data can be recovered granularly directly from the BDRSuite Backup Server using the Microsoft Exchange Server Recovery option.

  • In order to recover the individual objects from VMware Backup, Hyper-V Backup or Disk Image Backup that contain Exchange mailbox and emails, the VM or physical disk should be virtually mounted in disk management of the BDRSuite backup server machine
  • You can use the BDRSuite backup server GUI to select the Exchange database file *.EDB from the mounted location to list the user mailboxes and etc
  • You can either restore to same Exchange server or different exchange server or Microsoft Outlook , export as *.pst format or save as an EML,HTML

Benefits

Users can perform a granular search for and restore mailboxes, messages, attachments, and other items without performing a full restore.

Individual objects can be recovered quickly from large data sets. With BDRSutie, you can have granular recovery of Microsoft Exchange objects.
