Recovery Point Objective (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objective (RTOs) are two basic essentialities for a business continuity plan. They are very helpful in determining the sustainability period of a business at times of a disaster in keeping up Business Continuity.

Recovery Point Objective (RPOs):

RPO in general is defined as the maximum time limit that a business has before facing a sudden disaster which in turn reflects in loss of business data. Determination of this time limit is a crucial part and must be handled with utter consciousness.

Recovery Time Objective (RTOs):

RTO just like RPO is also an essential element and in general is defined as the maximum time limit that a business can withheld a disaster or in other terms maximum time limit for a disaster recover, during which a business can survive a disaster that just happened.

Why the Need:

As the definition clearly states RTO and RPO together plays the core of a BCP that helps to set a time frame for backup schedules based on RPO and RTO. This time frame can also be improvised with period and based on several testing conditions that helps to reduce the chance for disasters to happen. Even if the disaster occurs, an effectively planned BCP with determining actuals (RTA/RPA) based on previous instance occurrences will be helpful in quick restore of business that helps to resume business routines instantly.

Scenario:

For Example, if you are scheduling backups twice a day with 9 AM and 9PM as schedule times and there occurs a disaster around 2PM then RPA(Recovery Point Actual) is determined as 5 Hrs and you will be left with a RTA (Recovery Time Actual) of 7Hrs to get recovered from the disaster. The quicker the recovery, is efficient the Business Continuity Plan.

Conclusion:

An effective BCP can also be achieved with scheduling continuous backup or even by having smaller intervals between backups with more number of schedules per day.
