Backup verification plays an important role in the backup and recovery process. It helps customers ensure that their backup data is completed successfully. The verification will also notify you when the backup data is corrupted or lost in transaction.

To prevent data loss and corruption, Vembu BDR comes with backup verification. Customers are also notified that their data transfer is secure. This process of verification can be initiated depending on the customer’s choice.

By default the verification process happens once a day. It involves a three step verification process which includes mount, check disk error, and boot check. The results reflect in the backup verification report on the server under “Report → Backup Verification Report.” (Refer to the screenshot below)

Mount:

In this step we are going to mount our backup locally by using a VHD file in disk management. If the VHD file is corrupted or missing then the result will be shown in the backup verification report with a cross sign.

Check Disk:

This is the next process of backup verification, where it runs a check disk error to ensure that the backup is not corrupted or missing. This check is only applicable for disk image, VMware and Hyper-V plugin backup.

Boot Check:

Boot check is the last of the verification processes where the backup boots with the Hyper-V in the Windows server (KVM in the case of Linux). The boot check status is based on the “screen captured” and the screenshot will be saved in the installation location: “Vembu\VembuBDR\htmlgui\IntegritycheckSnapshots.

We can also get the boot check status from the server UI by clicking on the screenshot icon:

boot1

Note:

  • The first two processes, mount and chkdsk are unavailable for the Linux server.
  • The backup verification backup is only applicable for disk image, VMware and Hyper-V plugin backup.
  • When the boot check process shows successful it doesn’t ensure that your vm is booted successfully, because it all depends on the screenshot. For example,if the boot partition is missing then the vm boot will fail, but boot check status will show as successful.
