With VMware Cloud on AWS there are only two instance types, including i3.metal and i3en.metal and very recently, VMware has announced a new bare-metal instance type – the i4i.metal instance for VMware Cloud on AWS and this new instance has an optimal balance of compute, memory, and storage configuration for VMware Cloud on AWS customers.

The i4i.metal instances are great fit for workloads that need low latency local NVMe storage which includes databases MySQL, Oracle DB, and Microsoft SQL Server, and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Couchbase, Aerospike, and Redis. Also these instances are an ideal fit for workloads that could easily scale/migrate to the cloud, such as VDI workloads.

i4i.metal Instance Specification

The i4i.metal instance is nothing but an Amazon EC2 instance, powered by 3rd generation Intel® Xeon® Ice Lake processor and offers superior value in the migration and operation of both memory-bound and general-purpose workloads.

Single i4i.metal host has configuration of

storage 30TiB of raw local NVMe flash storage
processing power 128 vCPUs
CPU speed 3.5 GHz Turbo
memory 1,024 GiB
networking speed up to 75 Gbps

Benefits of i4i.metal

Lower TCO

I4i instances deliver up to 30% better compute price performance than I3 instances. I4i instances are twice the size of the largest I3 instance. The higher instance size lets you consolidate workloads on relatively fewer instances and hence you could achieve savings on per core licensing costs.

Faster application performance

While some SSD-based instances are created to achieve high performance results for benchmark tests that may not represent real workloads, I4i instances are designed to increase the number of transactions that can be processed per second (TPS). This allows you to meet and even exceed application service level agreements (SLAs) and deliver higher performance to end-users.

Maximized resource efficiency

The I4i instances are built on a combination of dedicated hardware and VMware hypervisor which can deliver all of the compute and memory resources of the host hardware to your instances for better overall performance and security.

Additional Information About VMC ON AWS i4i instance

  • Customers can configure the SDDC With Custom CPU Core Count starting with 8 to 64 physical cores (custom core counts of 8, 16, 24, 30, 36, 48, 64)
  • With i4i.metal instances, Multi-AZ (Stretched Cluster) deployment is available
  • host-to-host encryption is enabled by default which makes i4i.metal instance is a highly secure instance type
  • Single host i4i deployments are also available for a 60-day trial, without service level objective (SLO). Customers can have a mix of one or more i3.metal, i3en.metal, and i4i.metal Stretched Clusters in the same SDDC
  • FsxN (NetApp ONTAP) and VMware Cloud Flex Storage can be configured with i4i.metal Instance
  • 2-host production cluster for i4i.metal instance is available
  • All data at rest is encrypted with VMware vSAN in i4i.metal
  • All VMware Cloud on AWS available services will be supported on the i4i.metal instance including following
    • VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery (VCDR)
    • VMware Site Recovery
    • VMware vRealize Automation Cloud
    • VMware vRealize Operations Cloud
