The cloud adoption in organizations depends upon characteristics of workload. This concept has its swing between the public and the private cloud. Besides this, architectural considerations play a crucial role when it comes to cloud adoption. Here comes the role play of multi-tenancy. Multiple applications either inside or outside the enterprise are stated to be as tenants demanding an exclusive environment for virtual computing.

The virtual infrastructure resources in a multi-tenant environment require a powerful software for handling the multiple applications for its deployment and management. vCloud Director is one such software solution from VMware. Highly flexible data centers can be created with vCloud Director. The concept revolves around converting the physical data centers and its resources like compute, network, and storage into vCloud director resources. This vCloud director resource thus forms to be a catalog. These catalogs can be used for virtual appliances or media files across individual or multiple tenants.

The initial process includes setting a vCloud directors or vCDs Administrator. This Administrator creates an organization. The organization here is referred to as a compilation or collection of multiple users and groups. The vCD administrator is responsible to assemble the organization and allocate resources to it. The resources are assigned by the administrator with the help of the catalog which is created by converting the physical data center resources to virtual resources.

The administrator for vCD has of course the authority to create organizations but individual organizations can also have their own admins. These admins can add users to their organization. No necessity that a particular organization should receive resources only from one vCD rather the count can be in multiples.

The vCD allows multiple organizations use the resources by giving it the access to its self-service user portal under which multiple catalogs are arranged. Thus with vCloud Director, applications ie; vApps and Virtual Machines can be created. These vApp and VM templates are stored in the catalogs which the organizations can use to create their own vApp and VMs.

A vCD network is created in order to help the organizations interact and communicate using which the individual admins will gain greater control over their infrastructure.

Let me put the concept of vCloud Director also termed as vCD in a more relatable and a simple manner. A service provider who offers service to their customers can use the vCloud director to provision resources to their clients. Assume the service provider has 50 clients. The service provider here is the vCloud Director or vCDs administrator. He has the authority to create organizations which are his clients. The administrator setups a self-service portal which includes a template of vApps and VMs under multiple catalogs. These resources can be used by the organizations(50 clients in this case) under the vCD administrator. Every organization has its individual admin who has the right to add his users to the organization as per will. Thus the resources are shared and provisioned to the organizations who are more simply termed as tenant.

Conclusion

vCloud Director is a cloud software solution which creates an abstraction layer to abstract resources using which pools are created. The organizations(clients) are given access to the pools also referred to as catalogs from which multiple vApps and VMs can be created. This blog includes the vCloud directors part when Multi-tenancy is taken into account. The vCD has its use case in many other domains such as supporting open API ’s, enforcement of security, resource utilization and much more.
