This post is not a postmortem report on the shutdown of Nirvanix. Enough has been written and analyzed about the announcement that came last month which literally shocked storage geeks. Everywhere I turn to, the forums, LinkedIn, blogs and Twitter are rife with thoughts from analysts and ‘I told you so’ skeptics and naysayers.

One of the most common thought by naysayers seem to be that cloud services can never be trusted with your data as they might wind up operations anytime. Well, yes and no. That cloud service providers might wind up operations is not something I would argue against – let’s face it, businesses shut down. And no, because it would be preposterous to say that cloud services cannot be trusted with your data. These companies are experts in the technology and definitely know what they are doing. I remember listening to a very interesting panel discussion about data – the crux of the discussion was data is the new electricity. Do you generate and manage your own electricity?

Looking at the first part of my argument, businesses do break down. But what gives you and your customers the guts to place your faith blindly on one company? The foundation of the company. Vembu as a company has grown organically in almost a decade. We are a bootstrapped company and do not rely on external avenues of funding to keep us afloat. All our expenses are met with the revenue we make. Now this may not be the contemporary way of doing tech business, but ask any business guru out there and they would swear by this.

So what’s in it for you as a partner of Vembu? All I can say is you are in safe hands! And what’s in it for you if you are a partner of Nirvanix? Well, for starters, we would love to help you out of this crisis. We always speak about business continuity. It’s time to show you we mean it. If you have any questions or need help, please mail us at sathyanarain@vembu.com. We would love to talk to you and help you out.

I have never interacted with anyone working at Nirvanix, but from what I read and hear from my peers, it sure was a great company. R.I.P.
