Welcome to the Exam Study tips for the AZ-140 exam, Configuring and Operating Microsoft Virtual Desktop. This article describes my experience with the exam and gives you advice to prepare yourself well for this exam.

Who is the exam for?

This exam is for the desktop administrators who manage Azure Virtual Desktop environments, including remote apps. In addition, this exam is suitable for anyone who wants to know more about virtual desktops on Azure, such as Azure administrators, architects, and security engineers. Especially considering the fact that Azure Virtual Desktop is being used increasingly, this exam is highly recommended and frequently done.

AZ-140 Exam

This exam will be renewed in late February. The exam consists of the following topics :

  • Plan and implement an Azure Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (40-45%)
  • Plan and implement identity and security (15-20%)
  • Plan and implement user environments and apps (20-25%)
  • Monitor and maintain an Azure Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (10-15%)

As you can see from the list above, the focus is on planning and implementing an Azure Virtual Desktop infrastructure.

Exam Format

The exam includes :

  • One or more case studies, each with multiple questions
  • Single and multiple-choice questions
  • Drag and drop questions

In my experience, you cannot scroll back to previously answered questions during the exam. So make sure you do time management during the exam. You also get points for each correct answer in case of some questions, even if you get part of it wrong.

You will be given between 40 and 60 questions and must get a minimum score of 700 to pass. You will have 150 minutes to do this.

My Personal Experience

I recently renewed the AZ-140 again. Of course, I respect the NDA and can’t share specific confidential information. But some things I can share :

microsoft-azure-virtual-desktop

  • DNS
  • Make sure DNS on Azure (and externally) holds no secrets for you! Think about what things you need to configure on DNS for a good Virtual Desktop environment….

  • Hostpools
  • Seems obvious to me. Minimum reading on this, differences etc.

  • Network connectivity
  • Complementary to DNS, make sure you master the basic knowledge. Which express route is best to take, or go through a VPN connection or….?

  • Images
  • Creating images, troubleshooting, best practices, etc.

  • Licensing
  • Which license do you need when, for what and what are the differences?

  • FSLogix
  • Performance, configuration, storage…

  • Apps…apps..apps
  • In what ways can you offer apps, how can you add the right users, what steps should you go through, etc

  • Storage
  • A functioning storage carpet pad is essential. You know that! Expect a lot of questions about this proportionately!

The above list is not exhaustive, but it gives an idea of the types of questions you can expect.

Do I need specific knowledge before doing the exam?

Although it is not required, I recommend taking the Azure administrator (AZ-104) exam first. This is because Microsoft assumes you have sufficient (basic) knowledge of Azure, including hands on. So make sure you are familiar with Azure and have the necessary hands-on experience.

My tips

  • Get plenty of hands-on experience. Also note the peripheral issues that may be important (see above). Finally, deploy a virtual desktop environment multiple times in different ways.
  • Do you know the ins and outs of Azure Active Directory Domain Services? Deploy it (and use it for Azure Virtual Desktop).
  • Create images, provide updates within the images, install Microsoft Office, and apply appropriate best practices.
  • Practice with RemoteApps and assigning RBAC roles.
  • Auto-scaling and automation!
  • Do you have time left? Practice with Conditional Access and MFA policies!
  • Review the topics in the study guide and the exercises on the Microsoft Learn page.
  • Make sure you know how to configure different things in a lab.
  • Often your 1st hunch is the best. Try not to switch answers at the last minute.
  • Make sure you review the main topics of AZ-104 and AZ-305.
