Vembu introduces disk level restore, a new exclusive feature for VMware Backups available in BDR 2.1! Until now, backup software supporting VMware Backups would restore an entire VM machine. For the first time, you can now restore VMs at disk level.
Using this feature, specific disks of VM backups can be restored as a disk attached to targeted VM machines. This can easily be done with the steps below:
- For a VM restore, first the user should have the VM machine backed up to the server.
- Select the VM backup to be restored and make sure the backup is not currently in progress.
- Mount the VM backup and verify that the backups are listed and can be viewed in the virtual drive without any issues.
- Once the backup has mounted successfully, proceed with the recovery option: ‘Virtual Machine Disk Restore’ listed under the options of restore.
- Select the timestamp and version of backup to restore (you will also have options to restore instant boot changes).
- The list of VM machines under a specific server will be listed and you will be required to expand the VM to be restored. After expanding the VM, choose the disk to restore (from the disks listed under the VM).
- The final step will have the restore options for both: ESXi restore and vcenter restore.
- When selecting the ESXi restore, you will be required to provide the ESXi server name along with the username and password. Once completed, enter the target VM name along with the target datastore.
- After selecting vcenter restore, you will be required to provide the vcenter server name along with the vcenter username and password (make sure you provide the username with the domain name for vcenter 5.5). Then enter the target VM name along with the target datacenter and datastore.
- Proceed with the restore process.
This will help you restore and attach the required disks to a target VM machine. Try Vembu BDR 2.1 by downloading it at: www.vembu.com/try/
