What is the EU AI Act?

The EU Artificial Intelligence Act is a regulation that outlines the safe and responsible use of AI. It applies not only to AI developers but also to providers of AI systems as services and users. It is the first major legal framework in the world focused specifically on making sure AI is used safely, ethically, and responsibly.

What is the status of EU AI Act Now?

The EU AI Act is now officially adopted. This Act came into force in 2024, and the implementation started in 2025. The Act will be phased in over a 3-year period (2025–2028) to give companies time to comply.

Different obligations take effect at different times, starting with:

  • Feb 2025: Ban on prohibited AI systems
  • May 2025: General-purpose AI (GPAI) vendors must align with a voluntary code of practice
  • Aug 2026: Full enforcement for transparency, oversight, and risk management begins

How to Prepare for the EU AI Act

You don’t have to build everything at once, but you do need to start the right foundation now. Here’s how MSPs can prepare:

  • Identify all AI tools in use both internal and client-facing
  • Classify each tool by its risk level (prohibited, high, limited, minimal)
  • Create an AI Use Policy outlining approved tools, responsible use, and prohibited actions
  • Train your team to review AI-generated outputs, log usage, and escalate issues
  • Talk to vendors about their compliance roadmap and request documentation

Note: Even if your vendor is compliant, you are still accountable for how AI is used in your services.
