BDRSuite v5.5.0

New Features

Support for VMware vSphere v8.x

BDRSuite now supports Backup and Replication for virtual machines running on the latest version VMware vSphere v8.x.

Google Cloud as Backup Repository

Google Cloud Storage (Object Storage) is now supported in BDRSuite to store backup data, backup copy and offsite copy data. BDRSuite already supports other cloud storages such Amazon S3, Azure Blog, S3 Compatible storages such as Wasabi, MinIO, etc. 

ConnectWise Integration

BDRSuite now supports ConnectWise Integration. This feature allows you to create service tickets automatically in ConnectWise Manage for BDRSuite activities. The tickets can be created for various tasks (Backup/Restore/Replication) and different task status (Success/Failed/Warning) on relevant service boards.

Backup and Recovery of VMware VM Templates

BDRSuite for VMware now supports backup for VMware VM Templates. Now, VM Templates will show up in the list of VMware ESXi/vCenter entities that can be selected for backup. You can configure backup for VM Templates and restore when required.

Backup and Recovery of Google Workspace Shared Drive

BDRSuite now supports backup and recovery of Shared Drives in Google Workspace Organization.

Backup and Recovery of Microsoft 365 Archive Mailbox

BDRSuite now supports backup and recovery of user mails in the Archive Mailbox (In-place Archive) of Microsoft 365.

Deduplication for Microsoft 365 User Mails

BDRSuite supports deduplication for backed up user mails from Microsoft 365.

New Features 

File Server Backup from BDRSuite Backup Server UI

You can now add Windows and Linux file servers to the Data Source and configure file & folder level backup from the BDRSuite Backup Server console. The backup agents can be automatically pushed from the backup server or manually installed on the required servers. This feature allows you to manage the backup & recovery of a large number of machines from the centralized BDRSuite Backup Server. 

Endpoint Backup from BDRSuite Backup Server UI

Now, you can configure File & Folder Backup of many Windows & Linux Endpoints directly from the BDRSuite Backup Server console. The agents can be manually installed on the target system or pushed automatically. Also, you can add multiple endpoints in bulk using the CSV file. 

Azure Blob as Backup Repository

Primary backup data and backup copy data can now be stored in Azure Blob storage directly. 

Active Directory Integration 

BDRSuite Server now integrates with Active Directory for user management. You can import and add AD/LDAP users to the BDRSuite Backup Server and grant them different levels of access to the BDRSuite Backup Server.

Integrity Check on VMware ESXi Server

You can now run the automated boot test on VMware ESXi hosts to confirm the recoverability of the backup machines.

Restore to Microsoft Azure

BDRSuite now allows restoring the VMware VMs, Hyper-V VMs, Windows Servers & Windows Workstations backups to Microsoft Azure. You can initiate the restore directly from your BDRSuite Backup Server or Offsite DR Server.  

BDRSuite 360 Server

The BDRSuite 360 Server enables customers and service providers to monitor the backup activity of the BDRSuite Backup Servers deployed on their customer locations across multiple sites from a centralized web-based console. 


The multitenancy architecture of BDRSuite is redesigned to support advanced use cases of MSPs. You can now create multiple tenants and allocate one or more entities to each tenant. Every tenant will get multiple user roles to monitor and manage all the entities added under them.

Object Storage Backup Repository

You can now use the AWS S3 and S3 compatible object storage as a backup repository to directly store the backup data.

Backup Copy 

The backup copy feature allows you to create a copy of your primary backup data and store it in a different backup repository. If the primary backup data is damaged, the backup copy can be used to recover data.

BDR Cluster Deployment

BDRSuite now allows you to simply scale-out your existing BDRSuite Backup Server when it requires extra resources to handle growing workloads. Instead of expanding the CPU and RAM resources of the same BDRSuite Backup Server, you can install multiple instances of the BDRSuite Backup Servers and have them work together for load balancing and high availability.

New Features

Hyper-V VM Replication

You can now replicate your Hyper-V VMs from one host to another. In the event of a disaster or system crash, you may simply failover your production workloads to the replica VMs and continue your company operations.

Instant Boot Live Migration

VMs instantly booted from the backup repository can be fully restored in the background without any downtime. This will help you instantly restore a production VM when it is down and start using it in production as the full VM is being restored in the background.

Parallel VM Processing

Vembu now supports parallel backup of multiple VMs/disks in a single host. You can customize the number of backup jobs and the number of VMs/disks in a single backup job that can run in parallel from the BDR Backup Server GUI. 

Rotated Drives as Backup Repository 

Vembu now supports setting up rotated drives as the primary backup repository. This will help you to use multiple external hard drives to store the backup data and swap them on a regular basis.

GFS (Grandfather-Father-Son) Retention

BDR Suite 5.0 now supports GFS retention to create restore points on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis. GFS restore points are always tied to an Additional Full Backup or a Synthetic Full Backup.

Synthetic Full Backup 

Synthetic full backups are created in the backup repository by merging the full backup and all subsequent incremental backups in the backup repository itself, instead of running an additional full backup. It reduces the time and bandwidth usage over the network for creating multiple full backups in the backup repository.

Backup Job Template

Backup templates can be created using frequently used backup configuration settings or as per some predefined backup policies. You can utilize these templates to create new backup jobs quickly.

Multi-host Backup Support

BDR Suite 5.0 supports backup jobs with multiple-hosts in a single job and you can always configure running backup for different hosts/VMs inside a job to run in parallel thus improving backup performance.

Application Item-level Recovery from web GUI

BDR Suite 5.0 supports item level recovery for Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, and AD from BDR Backup Server web GUI. Any restore point can be selected and individual items can be recovered within minutes.

Microsoft 365 SharePoint Online Backup

Vembu Backup for Microsoft 365 now supports the backup and recovery of the entire sites, web collections, individual files, folders and entire document libraries of SharePoint Online.

Microsoft 365 Teams Backup

Vembu Backup for Microsoft 365 now supports the backup and recovery of the conversations, chats, planner, tasks, etc. of Microsoft 365 Teams.

Backup for Google Workspace

BDR Suite 5.0 also includes Backup for Google Workspace with support for backup of Mails, Google Drive, Contacts, Calendar etc

Backup for AWS

BDR Suite 5.0 now supports agentless and application-consistent backup of AWS EC2 instances.

Licensing & Pricing updates
  • The license cost of Vembu Backup for Microsoft Windows(Windows Servers) is reduced to $60/Server/Year from $120/Server/Year. 

  • The number of workstations that can be backed up under the Free Edition is reduced from unlimited workstations to 10 workstations. 

  • The users should pay $15 /Workstation/Year to backup their Windows workstations at image-level with Vembu Backup for Microsoft Windows

  • The users should pay $15 /Workstation/Year to backup their Windows & Mac workstations at file-level with Vembu Backup for File & Application

  • The free edition of the Vembu Cloud Backup for Files & Application (Vembu Online Backup) is now discontinued. 

  • The users should pay $6/Workstation/Year to backup their Windows & Mac workstations at file-level with Vembu Cloud Backup for File & Application. 

BDRSuite v4.1.0

New Features

  • Hyper-V VM backup now uses Microsoft’s native RCT(Resilient Change Tracking) to track changes in a VM disk (VHD/VHDX) (Only for Windows Server 2016 & above).

  • Application-aware processing of Oracle databases running on VMware VMs is now supported to ensure the consistency of the database.

  • Introducing backup proxy for VMware Backups. Backup proxies are now helpful in distributing the workloads and scale the backup infrastructure. Also, It handles the data traffic between VMware vSphere and Vembu BDR Server during the backup.

  • Backup support for the VMs data residing on the Hyper-V scale-out file server(SOFS).

  • Now users can exclude System Files(Pagefile.sys & Hyberfil.sys) from all image-based backups such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Windows image backup.

  • Hyper-V Failover Cluster Support: Support for backup and recovery of VMs running on Hyper-V Cluster setups.  The scheduled backups will not be interrupted even when the VMs move from one node to another for High Availability.

  • Checksum Based Incremental Tracking: The modifications made on the VMs running on Hyper-V servers are by default tracked using CBT technology. When CBT fails, the checksum-based incremental tracking is leveraged ensuring seamless backups.

  • VMware vSphere 6.5 Support is encapsulated in this package.

  • The Multitenancy support on Vembu BDR & Vembu OffsiteDR servers will help Service Providers/Partners manage their customers and their respective Vembu BDR servers under individual groups. Group level web access can be enabled for customers to monitor and manage their backup jobs.

  • Expect stability and performance enhancements from this version as the backend database is upgraded to PostgreSQL replacing MySQL and MongoDB. 

  • Free Edition Support is introduced in this release. Users can backup VMware, Hyper-V and Physical Windows Server with limited features at free of cost after the trial period.

  • Bandwidth Throttling for Offsite Copy will allow users to limit bandwidth while initiating Offsite data transfer to the from the Vembu BDR server to the Vembu OffsiteDR or the Vembu CloudDR.

  • The option to configure network settings during Instant VM recovery will allow the user to choose network switch to be assigned before booting VM thereby eliminating manual interventions.

  • Delete All / Wipeout Feature can be utilized to delete the backup data and reset their Vembu BDR server and start fresh like that of a fresh installation setup.

Vembu Universal Explorer is a separate application that’s used to perform granular level recovery of Microsoft Applications such as, Exchange, SQL, SharePoint and Active Directory from Disk image, VMware and Hyper-V backups.

  •  Seed Migration on Vembu CloudDR is now extended for the first full replication from Vembu BDR Server to Vembu CloudDR server to avoid huge bandwidth consumption.

  • Backup Window Scheduling on Vembu CloudDR will help you to automate on when the backup data should be uploaded to the Vembu CloudDR server. A user can choose to restrict replication during peak productivity hours as well.

  • Flat VMDK download is now included where Disk image, VMware and Hyper-V backups can be restored into Flat-VMDK format and directly uploaded to an ESXi server and booted as a VMware VM.

  • Persistent instant boot will help a user to retain the changes made during the Quick VM recovery session although the made changes may not be stored as an incremental. These persistent copies can also be used while performing Live Recovery to another VMware/Hyper-V server

  • VembuHIVE™ is our proprietary technology which is a file system of file systems with inbuilt version control, security, encryption, and inbuilt error correction. The inherent flexibility that allows VHFS to host any file system is the key to its ability to seamlessly support a wide range of complex restore use-cases in Vembu BDR.

  • Ability to retain more incremental, without the storage overhead: The entire backup data stored in VHFS is version-controlled with an intelligent meta-data management. This feature combined with compression gives the ability to retain multiple increments of a backup with minimal storage overhead. 

  • Any-point-in-time instant recovery, even when data is compressed, encrypted: Since every incremental is a self-sufficient snapshot with pointers to the blocks in VHFS, any incremental is instantaneously available as a full backup. 

  • Application-aware VMware & Disk-Image backups leverage application-specific VSS writers (SQL Server, Exchange) to take consistent snapshots of these apps, and truncate log files to ensure consistent backups for applications.

  • Restoring both disk image and VMware backups in VHD, VMDK, and RAW formats are possible since the backups are stored in a block level format

  • Instant Backup Verification after every Incremental with VembuHIVE Technology utilizes a mount test, boot test, and a check disk test so that the data doesn’t get corrupted either during the transit or when written to disk.
